Michael R. heard about Outreach from his halfway house after being released from the Department of Corrections. He walked over to the Seventh Avenue Center in Scranton, hoping to get some help building a resume and applying for jobs through the LEAD Center.

He met with Outreach Case Manager Heather and explained his background, including a history of involvement with the criminal justice system. At that time, he had submitted over 80 applications and received a half-dozen interviews, but he had fallen short of being hired.

Working with Heather, they built a resume and began submitting applications. Utilizing Outreach’s Employment Pipeline, Heather identified other second-chance employers that might be a good fit and talked with hiring managers on Michael’s behalf.

Through a temporary agency, he landed a position at a local chimney manufacturer. He started in December 2024 and was hired full-time by March 2025.

When asked how he felt about his job, he said fondly, “It’s the best thing that could have happened to me. Changed my life completely.”

Michael completed the requirements for the Ways to Work Program in addition to completing workforce development training in the LEAD Center. The Ways to Work Program provides low-interest car loans to individuals who might not have otherwise qualified.

Michael is shown here with his new car.
